About Bandy

Bandy is often called “the original winter team sport” — played on ice with a ball (not a puck) on a field the size of a football pitch. Think of it as ice hockey meets football: 11 players per side, on a 110m × 65m outdoor ice rink, using curved sticks and a small orange ball. It is governed by the Federation of International Bandy (FIB) and is most popular in Sweden, Russia, Finland, and Norway.

Key Characteristics

  • 2 halves of 45 minutes (same as football)
  • 11 players per side (including goalkeeper)
  • Orange ball (6.3cm diameter, 60-65g) — not a puck
  • Football-sized rink: 110m × 65m with boards
  • Large goals: 3.5m × 2.1m
  • Offside rule (like football)
  • Corners (corner strokes)
  • Yellow/Red cards (same card system as football)
  • High-scoring: 6-12 total goals per match typical
  • Winter sport: October–March season, weather-dependent (outdoor ice)
